Edi's, Zurich Unterstrass: Neighbourhood Italian Pizza - Review

Edi's on Schaffhauserstrasse in Zurich Unterstrass: a small Italian pizzeria with crisp classic pizzas, spritz and a warm welcome. Menu and tips.

Zurich has no shortage of pizza, from big chains to wood-fired places in the Old Town. Some of the most loved spots, though, are small neighbourhood pizzerias away from the tourist streets. Edi’s, at Schaffhauserstrasse 10 in Unterstrass, is one of them: a small Italian pizzeria with a short walk to Schaffhauserplatz and a strong reputation among locals and visitors who find it.

If you want a simple, classic Italian pizza evening in a residential part of the city, it is well worth the tram ride up from the centre.

What we ordered

  • Neapolitan-style pizzas.
  • An Aperol spritz and a negroni.

We sat at an outdoor table on a sunny day.

What makes a Neapolitan-style pizza?

Neapolitan pizza comes from Naples and follows a few simple ideas. The dough is soft and stretchy, left to rise for a long time, and baked very hot and very fast. The result is a thin centre and a puffy, airy edge called the cornicione, often with a few charred spots. Toppings are kept short: tomato, mozzarella or fior di latte, olive oil, basil.

Many pizzerias outside Italy cook in a “Neapolitan style” without following every rule of the traditional method. The name tells you what to expect: a light base, a raised crust and few, good toppings rather than a heavy, loaded pizza.

Classic pizzas to know

Italian pizza menus often use the same names. The most common:

  • Margherita: tomato, mozzarella and basil. The benchmark for any pizzeria.
  • Marinara: tomato, garlic, oregano and olive oil, no cheese.
  • Diavola: tomato, mozzarella and spicy salami. Popular with reviewers at Edi’s.
  • Capricciosa: ham, mushrooms, artichokes and olives.
  • Quattro formaggi: four cheeses, usually without tomato.
  • Prosciutto e funghi: ham and mushrooms.

If it is your first visit to a pizzeria, ordering a margherita and one other pizza to share is a good way to judge the dough and the sauce.

Spritz and negroni

The two drinks on our table are the classics of the Italian aperitivo:

  • Aperol spritz: Aperol, prosecco and a splash of soda over ice, with an orange slice. Light, bittersweet and low in alcohol.
  • Negroni: equal parts gin, Campari and sweet vermouth, stirred over ice. Stronger and more bitter, traditionally drunk before dinner.

The place

Edi’s is a small pizzeria, which is part of its appeal. Reviewers describe a cosy room, a welcoming feel and a host who is also behind the pizzas. In good weather, the outdoor tables on the pavement are a pleasant place to sit with a drink before the food arrives.

Good to know

  • Address: Schaffhauserstrasse 10, 8006 Zürich.
  • Size: the restaurant is small, so seats can go quickly. Booking ahead is a good idea, especially on weekends.
  • Outdoor seating: there are tables outside, which are popular on warm days.
  • Currency: Switzerland uses Swiss francs (CHF).

About Unterstrass

Unterstrass is part of Zurich’s District 6 (Kreis 6), on the slope just north of the city centre and the main station. It is mostly residential, with tree-lined streets, local shops and small restaurants. Schaffhauserplatz is the neighbourhood’s busy local square, with cafés, a few shops and good tram connections.

It is not a sightseeing area, which is why reviewers call Edi’s an offbeat find: it is the kind of place that mainly people who live nearby know about.

Getting there

  • By tram: trams 11 and 14 run from Zurich main station (Bahnhofquai/HB and Bahnhofplatz/HB) up towards Unterstrass, stopping at Kronenstrasse and Schaffhauserplatz. Edi’s is a short walk from both.
  • On foot: from Zurich main station, it is an uphill walk through District 6.
  • Planning: the SBB or ZVV app gives the best connection from anywhere in the city.

Best time to visit

On sunny days, an early evening table outside is the best way to enjoy the terrace with an aperitivo before dinner. Because the room is small, weekend evenings fill up, so book or arrive early. Some reviewers came back two nights in a row, which says a lot about how easy it is to make it a regular stop if you are staying nearby.

What Google reviewers say

Google rating: 4.9 out of 5 from 388 reviews (October 2026).

Reviewers praise the classic, traditional Italian pizzas with a crisp crust, and the diavola gets a special mention. They describe a cosy atmosphere, a very welcoming feel and a hospitable host and chef. Several call it an offbeat neighbourhood find, and some liked it enough to return two nights in a row.

Verdict

My rating: 3 out of 5. Edi’s is a small, friendly neighbourhood pizzeria with classic pizzas and a terrace for an aperitivo on sunny days: pleasant and solid rather than memorable. Good if you are already in Unterstrass, but not one to cross the city for.
