Gyumon Wagyu Ramen, Dotonbori: Halal Wagyu Ramen in Osaka - Review

Gyumon in Dotonbori serves ramen topped with wagyu beef, with halal-friendly and vegan options. The spicy wagyu ramen, the menu and tips for visiting.

Most ramen in Japan is built on pork: pork bone broth, slices of chashu pork belly. Gyumon (牛門) in Dotonbori does something different. Its ramen is topped with wagyu beef, the broths are made without pork, and the shop caters for halal-friendly and vegan diners, which makes it a rare find in a city where avoiding pork in ramen is surprisingly hard.

We had lunch there during our days in Osaka, a short walk from our hotel in Namba.

What we ordered

Spicy wagyu ramen. A bright red, creamy and spicy broth, noodles, slices of tender wagyu beef, a marinated soft-boiled egg, spring onions, narutomaki fish cake and a sheet of nori printed with the Gyumon logo. We added a side of fried chicken, served right on top of the bowl.

The beef is sliced thin, so it cooks gently in the hot broth. The spice level can be adjusted when you order, so you can go mild if chilli is not your thing.

The menu also has a creamy white-broth wagyu ramen and vegan ramen, and drinks like iced tea, which we had alongside.

Good to know

  • Address: 1-3-15 Dotonbori, Chuo-ku, Osaka. This is Gyumon’s wagyu burger branch, which also serves the wagyu ramen; Gyumon has several other shops nearby, including a dedicated ramen shop at 1-10-5 Dotonbori.
  • Halal and vegan: the shop markets itself as halal-friendly and offers vegan bowls. If formal halal certification matters to you, ask the staff directly, as we could not find a published certificate.
  • English menu: available, and ordering is easy.
  • Not to be confused with Gyumon’s sukiyaki restaurant in Shinsaibashi, which is a separate place.

Why pork-free ramen is hard to find

Ramen in Japan comes in a few main styles:

  • Tonkotsu: a rich, milky broth made by boiling pork bones for hours.
  • Shoyu: a soy sauce-based broth, often made with chicken, pork or both.
  • Shio: a lighter, salt-based broth.
  • Miso: a heartier broth flavoured with fermented soybean paste.

Even when the broth is not pork-based, most bowls are topped with chashu, slices of braised pork belly, and many use pork fat or pork stock for flavour. That makes ramen one of the hardest Japanese dishes for people who avoid pork. Shops that cook without pork, and say so clearly, are useful to know about.

What is wagyu?

Wagyu literally means “Japanese cattle”. The term refers to specific Japanese breeds, the best known being the Japanese Black, raised and graded in Japan. Wagyu is famous for its marbling: thin streaks of fat running through the meat, which melt when cooked and make it very tender and rich.

In ramen, wagyu is usually sliced thin and laid over the hot noodles, so the heat of the broth cooks it gently. It replaces the usual pork chashu and gives the bowl a more beefy, buttery flavour.

How to order

  • Pick a broth. The menu has a spicy red broth, a creamy white broth and vegan bowls.
  • Choose your spice level. If you are not sure, start mild; you can usually add chilli at the table.
  • Add toppings. Extra egg, extra meat or a side such as fried chicken are common additions.
  • Ask about ingredients. If you have dietary requirements, staff can tell you what is in each bowl.

Ramen etiquette

  • Slurping is normal and even considered a sign that you are enjoying your noodles. It also cools them down.
  • Eat fairly quickly, as noodles soften in the broth and many shops have a queue.
  • You do not have to finish the broth, especially rich ones.
  • Tipping is not expected in Japan.

Getting there and what to do nearby

Gyumon is in the heart of Dotonbori, Osaka’s most famous food and nightlife street along the canal. The nearest stations are Namba (Midosuji, Yotsubashi and Sennichimae subway lines, plus Nankai and Kintetsu railways) and Nipponbashi. From Namba, it is a short walk.

Around Gyumon you can easily fill an afternoon or evening:

  • The Glico Running Man sign and the canal walk at Ebisu Bridge, best after dark when the neon is on.
  • Hozenji Yokocho, a quiet stone-paved alley with a small, moss-covered temple.
  • Shinsaibashi-suji, a long covered shopping arcade heading north.
  • Kuromon Market, a short walk east, for seafood and street food.

Dotonbori is also one of the best places in Japan for street snacks such as takoyaki and okonomiyaki, so leave some room.

Best time to visit

Lunch on a weekday is the easiest time. Dotonbori gets very crowded in the evening and at weekends, especially around the canal. A late lunch, after the main rush, is usually the calmest option.

What Google reviewers say

Google rating: 4.6 out of 5 from 300 reviews (October 2026).

Reviews of this branch are mostly glowing: fair prices, friendly and fast service and generous portions come up again and again. The ramen and the wagyu burgers are the most-mentioned dishes, and several reviewers like being able to choose the spice level. Halal diners appreciate having more choice than usual. The only recurring criticism is that presentation is simple.

Verdict

My rating: 3 out of 5. A practical option in Dotonbori if you do not eat pork, or if you are with vegan or halal diners, which is rare among Osaka’s ramen shops. Fine for that, but not the place for a classic bowl of Japanese ramen.
